The Chicken Alley Hot 5 | Featuring Hank West and Dr. Gary Rodburg

The Chicken Alley Hot 5 brings together the cast of some of Asheville’s finest purveyors of old-time hot jazz from the past 25 years. The group conjures their name from the memories of the infamous Space Lounge of Chicken Alley (the whispered about OG speak-easy where many of this group cut their teeth) tucked away in AVL’s bohemian past. Featuring the return of Hank West on trumpet from his now-home of New Orleans where he has been harvesting the roots of hot jazz for his ju-ju bag. The reeds are handled with surgical precision by the newest addition to the Land-of-the Sky, Dr. Gary Rodberg of Firecracker Jazz band. Add to the pair of winds the veteran high-country rhythms of Craig Kelberg on bass (of Dreamboats fame), Andrew Fletcher on piano and Jason Krekel on strings (both of Firecracker Jazz band). The band will have the room moving with selections from the song books of Jellyroll Morton, Bix Beiderbecke and Louis Armstrong to name a few. Not to be missed!
