Bob Songster’s NC Roots Quartet returns for a special tribute celebrating the life, music, and enduring legacy of Max Roach, the groundbreaking drummer, composer, and North Carolina native who forever changed the course of jazz.

Born in northeastern North Carolina in 1924, Roach helped define the bebop movement alongside legends like Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, transforming the drum set into a dynamic instrument of melody, conversation, and innovation. His fearless creativity and commitment to artistic expression continue to inspire generations of musicians around the world.

Through inspired interpretations of Roach’s compositions and music influenced by his revolutionary spirit, the NC Roots Quartet honors one of the state’s most influential musical voices in an evening celebrating rhythm, improvisation, and the evolution of modern jazz.
