Gigi’s Underground
A long time ago, in an Asheville far, far away, a group of jazz fanatics began a much-frequented Wednesday night run at a humble but musically inviting downtown club called Tressa’s Jazz and Blues.
The group was named Hard Bop Explosion and dedicated itself to bringing the jazz message (and Jazz Messengers) to the masses by playing the 1950s-1960s jazz classics with fire and fidelity.

Ten years passed. Venues closed. Parking lots opened. Musicians moved on. Jazz scenes grew elsewhere. Hard Bop went underground.

Armed with a grand piano, a book of dozens of rare grooves, new musicians, and tons of energy, the group re-exploded onto the scene on September 7th in the old time slot, 7:30-10:00pm on Wednesday. Like before, the group charged no cover but suggested a $5 donation.
Those who attended that fateful night knew they had witnessed a special event: a rebirth and a new partnership… something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue…
