Relive the intimate storytelling, intricate chord changes and breathtaking melodies of these gifted artists – their work building on and transcending the more traditional folk-influenced acoustic music of the previous decade.
Tom Glynn is a John Lennon Songwriting Contest winner and a Boston Music Award nominee for Outstanding Songwriter. A number of his songs have been chosen by NSAI (Nashville Songwriters Association) for their coveted Top 40 honor, and his music has been featured on ABC, Fox, Lifetime and Showtime. Life Like Water, featuring Matt Smith on pedal steel, dobro and electric guitar is set to perform at Hawk & Hawthorne on Saturday, August 24. Richmond, Virginia’s Høly River will also perform.
Life Like Water is the creation of multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter, David Matters. With a focus on hypnotic rhythms, heartfelt lyrics, and melodies that contain flavors of Africa, Ireland and the Middle East, the music of this eclectic ensemble is sure to uplift and inspire.
Høly River was founded by multi-instrumentalists Laney Sullivan and Jameson Price. Fusing together the pulse of drone pop, worldly instrumentation, this experimental music would best be described as a landscape, as a biome all its own. This musical phenomenon has come to be known as “Earth folk,” a type of music inspired thematically by the natural environment: flora, fauna, soil, stars, and the human experience.

This band is pushing funk music into the future, building on the pioneering foundations laid out by the likes of James Brown and Sly & the Family Stone. They infuse their fresh take with Afrobeat, hip-hop, psychedelia, world folklore, and more.

This summer we are following King Gizzard around the US a bit and playing some afterparties on select dates of the tour. Excited to be playing in some areas we’ve never been to, and we’re looking forward to making new friends on the road!
Initially drawing inspiration from Jam music and traditional Americana, the sound established in the early years was loose, but fun, maybe even slightly subdued. As the band developed further, so did their sound, reflecting a heavier and more psychedelic influence in their music. The band now is firing on all cylinders, and their live shows touch on all fronts of this ever-broadening soundscape.
