He was a member of Muddy Waters band in the 1960s; he recorded with John Lee Hooker and Otis Spann (among others); his band The Soul Invaders was the backing unit for B.B. King and The Temptations; he was part of the house band for Soul Train… .and also played with Bill Withers. He retired back to SC and resumed the life he grew up in, the life of a farmer. He was “re-discovered” by young musicians who persuaded him to resume his music career and his second music career has proven very successful with recordings, tours, and a HUGE fan base.

When the originators of the Asheville Original Music series—bassist Mike Holstein and drummer Justin Watt—teamed up with pianist Dr. William Bares (Harvard ethnomusicology Ph.D and professor of music at UNC Asheville) a decade ago to create a working jazz piano trio, the result was a new musical concept that has blurred the lines between art and entertainment, structure and spontaneity. Burnpile is Burial Beer Co.’s premier Beer and Music Festival. Hosted at Burial’s Forestry Camp facility, attendees enjoy a full-day concert alongside a tasting experience from a diverse lineup of 50+ of the best breweries in the country.

Each year, we invite some of the finest breweries across the globe to join us. Our guest list represents long-lasting industry friendships and producers who have blown us away with their offerings. We’re also proud to offer an exciting list of newcomers to join the party.

This year, we’re leaning into that Americana thang. Enjoy live performances by Deer Tick, S.G. Goodman, and MJ Lenderman.

There are three levels of immersion at Burnpile 2023:

Burial operates four taprooms across the state of North Carolina: the OG South Slope Taproom and Forestry Camp facility in Asheville, the Charlotte House of Relics and the Raleigh Exhibit in downtown DTR. Progress continues to be made on the South Slope expansion, which will include Eulogy music venue, additional Beer Hall space, an additional Brewing Facility, Restaurant, VISUALs Bar, and Rooftop Experience. This October, the Haywood County Historical & Genealogical Society and Mountain Memories Productions will co-sponsor a fundraiser to benefit the Society and the Canton Historical Museum. As part of an increased effort in Haywood County to celebrate our rich history, the HCH&GS will hold a new event called “Plott-Toberfest” which combines the traditional PlottFest UKC Annual Competition – a celebration of our NC State Dog, the Plott Hound – and the rich German history of Haywood County.

BRAZILIAN JAM SESSION @ Archetype Brewing - West
