Life Like Water, featuring Matt Smith on pedal steel, dobro and electric guitar is set to perform at Hawk & Hawthorne on Saturday, August 24. Richmond, Virginia’s Høly River will also perform. 

Life Like Water is the creation of multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter, David Matters. With a focus on hypnotic rhythms, heartfelt lyrics, and melodies that contain flavors of Africa, Ireland and the Middle East, the music of this eclectic ensemble is sure to uplift and inspire.

Høly River was founded by multi-instrumentalists Laney Sullivan and Jameson Price. Fusing together the pulse of drone pop, worldly instrumentation, this experimental music would best be described as a landscape, as a biome all its own. This musical phenomenon has come to be known as “Earth folk,” a type of music inspired thematically by the natural environment: flora, fauna, soil, stars, and the human experience.

Jon Stickley Trio is a genre-defying and cinematic instrumental trio, who’s deep grooves, innovative flatpicking, and sultry-spacy violin moves the listener’s head, heart, and feet. A progressive ensemble from Asheville, North Carolina, they are rooted in the traditions of bluegrass, but perform Gypsy jazz and folk-punk as well. A live performance by the Joe Krown Trio + 1 featuring Papa Mali is a journey through the rich musical heritage of New Orleans. The Joe Krown Trio is known for its authentic New Orleans sound, blending elements of jazz, blues, and funk. This summer we are following King Gizzard around the US a bit and playing some afterparties on select dates of the tour. Excited to be playing in some areas we’ve never been to, and we’re looking forward to making new friends on the road!

Initially drawing inspiration from Jam music and traditional Americana, the sound established in the early years was loose, but fun, maybe even slightly subdued. As the band developed further, so did their sound, reflecting a heavier and more psychedelic influence in their music. The band now is firing on all cylinders, and their live shows touch on all fronts of this ever-broadening soundscape.

The first song he wrote was titled “Jay” an ode to his late Grandfather. Nick is quoted by saying “when the cords finally came together with the lyrics for the first time it brought me to tears and I knew this was something that  I could passionately pursue”.  Nick writes songs about love, life experiences and hardships we all face in the day to day grind. You can’t really put a label on the genre he resides in.  Nick dives into to a few different genres such as Blues, Country, Rock and Folk music. For the last few years Nick has been tearing up the local scene in Western North Carolina with his band Nick Mac & The Noise that has the reputation of being a smooth playing, good time chasing high energy rocking country band that brings a good mix of originals and eclectic covers to the table
