Life Like Water, featuring Matt Smith on pedal steel, dobro and electric guitar is set to perform at Hawk & Hawthorne on Saturday, August 24. Richmond, Virginia’s Høly River will also perform. 

Life Like Water is the creation of multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter, David Matters. With a focus on hypnotic rhythms, heartfelt lyrics, and melodies that contain flavors of Africa, Ireland and the Middle East, the music of this eclectic ensemble is sure to uplift and inspire.

Høly River was founded by multi-instrumentalists Laney Sullivan and Jameson Price. Fusing together the pulse of drone pop, worldly instrumentation, this experimental music would best be described as a landscape, as a biome all its own. This musical phenomenon has come to be known as “Earth folk,” a type of music inspired thematically by the natural environment: flora, fauna, soil, stars, and the human experience.

Jon Stickley Trio is a genre-defying and cinematic instrumental trio, who’s deep grooves, innovative flatpicking, and sultry-spacy violin moves the listener’s head, heart, and feet. A progressive ensemble from Asheville, North Carolina, they are rooted in the traditions of bluegrass, but perform Gypsy jazz and folk-punk as well. Jon Stickley plays flat-pick guitar; Lyndsay Pruett plays violin; Hunter Deacon plays drums.

Country Brunch at The Grey Eagle – a music series for early birds. Country Brunch showcases a goldmine of local country bands that can usually only be found playing late nights in local and regional venues, and brings them out  into the light of day for lovers of an early matinee show. The series runs monthly with a different band each month.

Jamie Hendrickson (of The Fritz and Electro Lust) is joined by Thommy Knoles (The Fritz) and Joe Enright for an exciting afternoon of psychedelic funk! Hendrickson, bandleader and lead guitarist for Asheville based legends The Fritz, brings his unique style of psychedelic funk back to Sierra Nevada with an all star cast featuring some of the cities best players. A live performance by the Joe Krown Trio + 1 featuring Papa Mali is a journey through the rich musical heritage of New Orleans. The Joe Krown Trio is known for its authentic New Orleans sound, blending elements of jazz, blues, and funk. Led by the acclaimed keyboardist Joe Krown, the trio delivers a rich, groove-filled experience. Adding another layer of musical depth is Papa Mali. Known for his gritty, soulful voice and masterful guitar playing, Papa Mali infuses the trio’s music with a swampy, bluesy vibe that’s reminiscent of the bayou.

Sip and stroll through the Arboretum’s gardens in the glow of the golden hour, all while listening to live music from a variety of local and regional artists! ArborEvenings runs Thursdays and most Fridays through September from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m.

There is no additional cost to attend ArborEvenings beyond our standard parking fee. As always, Arboretum Society members and their accompanying guests can enter for FREE (guests must be in member vehicles to receive free entry). Proceeds from ArborEvenings help support the The North Carolina Arboretum Society and further advance the Arboretum’s mission.
