Mike Holmes, aka Nostalgianoid, is a black queer multidisciplinary artist from Asheville, NC. Music has been a passion for them for as long as they can remember, and for more than half of their life, played in various projects ranging across genres along with creating their own music through different mediums.
Ideal Self is the captivating brainchild of Frances and Lee X. Davis. The duo’s songwriting showcases rich and intricate electronic arrangements, propelled by driving synthesizers and pulsating drum machines. Frances’ ethereal vocals add a mesmerizing touch.

Duck was formed in 2016 as a funky, bluesy band making crowds boogie to their upbeat sound. In 2021, with the addition of Donnie Tyree on vocals, Duck found their soulful groove both writing music and performing.
What can be better than Bass? That’s right, twice the amount of Bass. Superbassic is a collaboration between Asheville’s staple low-end theorists, Asher Hill and Josh Clark. Alongside the masterful pocket-work of multi-instrumentalist Paul Gladstone, Superbassic provides an experience for both dancers and listeners alike.
Magenta Sunshine laces danceable rhythms, horn-driven soundscapes, and poetic lyricism into genre-defying arrangements. This six-piece project is synthesizing well-crafted songs into brassy, funky psychedelia.

George Porter Jr. is an award-winning bassist, songwriter and vocalist. He is a founding member of New Orleans’ seminal funk band, The Meters and widely recognized as one of the greatest bass players of all time. At 76, George still maintains a healthy touring schedule with his Runnin’ Pardners, a cast of seasoned and talented musicians including long-time collaborator Michael Lemmler (keyboards), Terrence Houston (drums) and Chris Adkins (guitar). The band is known for its stop-on-a-dime tightness and proves over and over that with the right musical ingredients the magic can actually be bottled.

- Cave Grave is a down tuned death metal trio from Asheville, NC that blends osdm, slam and grindcore into a brutal cesspool of decrepit filth, and it’s catchy as hell. After just two splits and an EP, they unveil a proper full-length, “Unfurling Putridity”, eight songs of punishing death metal.

The Well Drinkers are a progressive, original bluegrass band based out of Western North Carolina. Americana Soul, Singer-songwriter & guitarist, Whitney Mongé learned to capture the power of authenticity while honing her skills as a street performer. Her rich and sultry voice, accompanied by a raspy break at the edges, has drawn comparisons to esteemed artists like Brittany Howard and Lenny Kravitz. The absolutely unfettered energy of Asheville’s psych/garage band Impending Joy begs to be heard live. The driving surf punk-esque sound has to be enjoyed communally.
Most bands fit cleanly within a genre but Tongues of Fire don’t. At their heart they are a punk band, their shows are unhinged, the music is straightforward and hard hitting, there is no trace of excessiveness but they are accessible and there is a well crafted feel to what they do.

The Music Department at the University of North Carolina Asheville celebrates the 100th anniversary of the debut of George Gershwin’s American classic, “Rhapsody in Blue,” with a campus concert titled “Rhapsody 100 (The Experiment Continues)” at 3 p.m. on Sunday, February 4, in Lipinsky Auditorium.
The original 1924 “Experiment in Modern Music” concert, which debuted Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue,” was a uniquely American fusion of jazz and classical music. The centennial concert will bring together talented UNC Asheville faculty and esteemed musicians from the greater community in an “Ashevillean” spirit of musical experimentation. A highlight of the 2023-2024 UNCA Loves Piano concert series, this event features a full orchestra, a jazz combo and distinguished soloists and conductors. FREE SHOW-Centric “jam band”. Since their formation in 2004, Phuncle Sam has been firmly rooted in musical exploration. The Paper Crowns’ Spiro and Nicole are one of the premier duos on the Southeast music scene. They have returned to their jam and psychedelic roots with their full on electric ensemble – The Paper Crowns Electric Band. Their sound is a medley of blues, psychedelic and Southern rock, American folk and jazz, Gospel and funk. The Paper Crowns sound is dynamic and soulful featuring original songs and intrepid improvisation. No Cover, all ages welcome.

The Nashville trio consists of past members from indie outfits The Weight and Silver Jews, and, as their name suggests, have a raw country sound. Released by Fat Possum Records in 2020, their self-titled debut album was praised by Pitchfork for being “ragged in all the right places” and landed a spot on the publication’s ‘35 Best Rock Albums of the Year’ list.
Forged in the mountains of Boone, RUGG is a heavy psychedelic trio that deals in the visceral and raw. They blend the ideas of past and present heroes with their own unique flavor of psych-rock to create a sound that’s just as engaging as it is entrancing.

Aaron “Woody” Wood’s story is one steeped in music and tradition. Woody is straight up Appalachian Soul music. Carved from a piece of the NC foothills Rock and Rolled through the Mississippi Delta mud, he’s a cosmic cowboy who represents the powerful soul and energy of American music.

Weight Shift – Formed in the Great Smoky Mountains, during the summer of 2021. Siblings Katie and Seth Hutchinson founded Weight Shift and sought to bring heavy riffs backed with grooving drums . Heavy metal veteran Timothy Todd Cook took over the drumming duties and they’ve had their noses to the grindstone since.

Donna the Buffalo draws on a lot of musical influences, from country and rock ‘n’ roll, to bluegrass and old-time fiddle, as well as Cajun and Zydeco. In many ways, they were Americana before the term was ever coined. The common thread? Songs of the human spirit, and an incredibly tight relationship with their fans.
The Steel Wheels have long been at home in the creative space between tradition and
